Two distinct painting and drawing techniques make up my practice: one is based on shape, pattern, and motif based and the second is less geometric and more organically formed. The subject of both styles of work are based on experiments forming shapes through expanded elements of drawing. Using the width of my body to create honest forms, I naturally and quickly arrange lines and compositions alongside bold colors particularly yellow, blue and green. I use unstretched canvas, challenging what ‘finished’ work means through creating balanced images which are raw and accidental.
Although intuitive, my work also restricts, using negative space and motifs as part of my ongoing investigation of process, identity and meaning. Layers of my paintings get taken through stages constantly informed by my feelings, adding color, taking away color and leaving traces of remnants. Repeated marks, motifs and shapes which feature in my work, resist assuming the pictorial or becoming simple abstraction. The paintings therefore have their own physicality providing more than the reduction of an image.
