Tiegan Handley

I work primarily in textiles, in a way that allows me to be physical – to work at something with my hands, in hand or machine sewing. It is important to me to be environmentally effective when working, and I make a point of utilising all reclaimed, recycled, or second hand fabrics. this reclamation of used textiles is twofold, both following the historic traditions of quiltmaking from its birth as a functional item created from scraps, and remaining conscious of the waste I create during the manufacture.

My practice is currently concerned with expressive statements about myself, my queerness, and my identity as a queer person, in conjunction with both historical and contemporary traditions of quiltmaking, and its associations with both craft, and protest. the idea of the matrilineal transference of knowledge is also a pillar of my work.

It is also important to me to utilise a combination of historical and contemporary quiltmaking techniques within the manufacture, display, and dissemination of my work. I use quilt blocks and patterns which have a long history – a well-known style of quilt block is not reserved for one quiltmaker, but is shared across time and location. In conjunction with this, I try and document both the process of making and the final quilt, in both an art-quilt context, that of a modern domestic quiltmaker, and within the tradition of social-media quiltmakers.
