Anya Pasternack

My practice is mostly process-led but an appreciation of nature, femininity, playfulness and colour are omnipresent in my paintings. My work is somewhere between accident and intention as there’s a lot of adding, taking away and layering used to find the composition. I am searching for a feeling of balance in the work when painting. I love the immediacy and richness of paint; it lends well to the contrasts and combinations of textures and colours that are essential in my process.

I want my works to be both earthy and vibrant and, importantly, bring joy to myself and the audience. I’d like the experience of viewing my paintings to be like seeing them being made. Drawings inform my paintings and serve as a place for experimentation. I’m interested in creating spaces where nature, the body, and movement can converse, and I enjoy thinking about the interconnectivity of all these things while working.
