As an artist I am concerned with the phenomenon of the other. I define ‘the other’ as a feeling, an experience, or a subject that evokes existentialism through ambiguity and the uncanny. Feeding into my exploration of otherness (and becoming othered from reality/the self) is the visual examination of depersonalisation and derealisation through digital photography. The other is also embedded within the horror genre; the heightened emotions of fear and anxiety stemming from the unknown and unknowable being motifs of the genre. Therefore, my practice draws upon horror iconography to construct photographed portraits through the lens of horror.

My practice exists in both the physical and digital realm. For the former, I combine multi-layered images with found footage style video and atmospheric soundscapes. The film is then installed onto box monitors, to create a physical sculpture of otherness. For the latter I capture images of the face lit in either neon colours or submerged in near total darkness; in either version the face transmutes into something uncanny and not entirely human. In doing so, my digital images evoke the horror of becoming othered from the self.
